TRADITIONAL SKYWRITING – Accomplished by a single plane maneuvering through the sky to form letters. The white smoke that remains like writing across the sky is composed of a special oil, which combines with the plane’s exhaust. The average skywriting message is up to six characters long and 800 to 1,200 ft. (244 to 366m) tall. For longer messages, multiple airplanes can be used.

DIGITAL SKYWRITING (SM) – Five to seven planes. They fly rigidly parallel and equidistant courses as nearly in perfect unison as possible. The message to be written is arranged on a master control panel, and as the planes fly abreast electronic signals cause the smoke-emission mechanism in each plane to release puffs of smoke accordingly. Digital Skywriting is carried out by a squadron of planes that are coordinated to print different segments of the message simultaneously. Every few seconds a new letter or logo is finished. The average Digital Skywriting message is up to twenty (20) characters and can stretch five to eight miles (8 to 12.9km) long with each character measuring 500 to 800 ft. (152m to 244m) tall.

Skywriting Aerial Advertising Concerns Airads

Skywriting Aerial Advertising Concerns

SKYWRITING AIRCRAFT – It is critical to execute skywriting of any kind with airplanes that can expel as much smoke as possible and as quickly as possible.

SKYWRITING PILOT – The facts are that today, skywriting is a fading art form. There are less than six veteran sky writing pilots available worldwide that would be considered to perform your job.

TRAVEL COSTS – Travel costs are figured into most jobs that are not long term. These travel costs may sometimes be more than the actual Skywriting Costs due to moving an airplane/s and pilot/s to your desired sky writing location. Travel costs are non-refundable once the airplane/s and pilot/s have departed to your location.

WEATHER CONDITIONS – This is the most critical element to a successful sky writing campaign. It is simple, we must have MOSTLY clear skies along with winds that are NO MORE THAN 8 mph (12.9kmh) at and above 7,000 to 14,000 ft. (2,134 to 4,268m) overhead the target. The cooler the temperature the better with 95 degrees (35c) being a maximum temperature for best results.

Skywriting Aerial Advertising Frequently Asked Questions

HOW MANY CHARACTERS CAN BE SKY WRITTEN EFFECTIVELY? – Traditional Skywriting works best for messages or brands that are one (1) to four (4) characters long. You can have up to twelve (12) characters written but don’t expect to see the whole message or brand intact at the end. Digital Skywriting works best for messages or brands that are six (6) to twenty (20) characters long. You can have up to thirty (30) characters or more written but don’t expect to see the whole message or brand intact at the end.

WHEN WAS SKYWRITING FIRST DONE? – The technique was first developed in 1922 by english, aviation pioneer J. C. Savage. Sky-written ads date back to the 1930’s when Pepsi put its message up among the clouds from coast to coast. Pepsi has continued its extensive skywriting program to this day with their fully dedicated aircraft skywriting its trademark brand over thirty plus major markets per year.

HOW DO YOU SKYWRITE? – Skywriting is an aviation technique created by vaporizing fluid in the plane’s exhaust system to form letters in the sky.

HOW BIG ARE THE LETTERS? – Each letter is about one-mile (1.6km) high, and the average four to six character message is written across a 10-mile (16.1km) slate of sky. Digital Skywriting messages are approximately five to eight miles (8 to 12.9km) long. Each character is over 1,500 ft. (457m) tall. Messages can be up to 25 to 30 characters and can be written in various languages.

HOW FAR AWAY CAN YOU READ SKYWRITING? – On a clear day, each letter can be seen for up to 30 miles (48.3km) in any direction from the ground. That’s over 3,000 sq. miles (7,770km2) for each message written. As the wind drifts the sky written words, even more people see them! A single writing is readable over a seven to eight mile (11.3 to 12.9km) radius.

HOW HIGH UP DO YOU SKYWRITE? – Typically, writing is performed between 7,000 (2,134m) and 17,000 ft. (5,182m).

WHAT ABOUT WEATHER CONDITIONS? – Ideal conditions are clear, blue skies with no more than moderate winds up to 3 knots (3.5mph / 5.6kmh). Clouds can work too! As long as we have ten to twelve miles (16.1 to 19.3km) separations between clouds. Sky writing can be done year round, in warm and cold climates. Air temperature drops 3 to 5F (.17 to .15C) degrees for every 1,000 ft. (305m) of altitude. On warmer days, skywriting must be done at higher altitudes. September and October tend to be the best months. Weather and wind conditions dictate how long the message will stay together and linger in the sky while drifting.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SKYWRITE EACH CHARACTER? – Each character takes 60 to 90 seconds of carefully choreographed flying that includes precisely timed turns and different bursts of skywriting fluid.

WHAT MAKES THE SKYWRITING SMOKE? – An environmentally-approved, oil-based fluid that is vaporized in the 1,500F (816c) degree heat of the exhaust of the aircraft’s engine. Engine heat is used to turn specially treated paraffin oil into white smoke, which is discharged under pressure.

WAS THE SKY WRITING IN “THE WIZARD OF OZ” REAL? – Hands down, the most recognized skywriting job ever performed was the “SURRENDER DOROTHY OR DIE” skywriting scene executed by Ms. Elmira Gulch, the Wicked Witch of the North in the motion picture, “The Wizard of Oz” (1939). Motion picture special effects were completely responsible for this skywriting scene.

The mastermind behind this effect was a man named Jack McMaster.

He describes how the effect was accomplished: “I had a glass tank six foot square (3.3m2), the bottom of the tank was glass. The sides were wood. The tank was only three inches (7.6cm) deep; and the bottom was covered with an inch and a half (3.8cm) of water mixed white calla oil. That was supposed to be the sky. The camera was beneath the tank, shooting up. The water and oil mixture was opaque, so it hid me. The miniature Witch who did the skywriting was three eighths of an inch (1.9cm) high, and the broom she was riding was a hypodermic needle. I filled the hypodermic with a combination of canned milk and nigrosine dye.

“I wrote SURRENDER DOROTHY OR DIE upside down and backward in the fluid in the tank, using the needle in place of a pen. I practiced for two months before I did it. My hand wasn’t in the tank, but the Witch and the broom needle were. The skywriting seemed to come out of the tail of the Witch’s broom. To give the writing the appearance of smoke that was drifting, I had a fifty-gallon (189L) drum of water feeding into the tank. I had tinted the water the same milky color as the liquid in the glass tank. The water current was a stream like an air stream-blowing the letters apart.” A neat and clever special effect!
